Robert G. Harrison
Water/Wastewater Superintendent
Village of West Liberty, Ohio

“Analysts from West Liberty have attended various Alloway seminars. We found the seminars to be invaluable. The time was well spent, the material was presented in a very organized and straightforward manner, and the instructors moved at a pace that was comfortable for the group. The seminars were also practical, as we were able to apply the learning in our own lab. Great seminars!”

Data Handling
Run Time: 29 minutes

Who will benefit: This course is targeted to the needs of laboratory supervisors, managers, field technicians, analysts and operators who perform laboratory measurements, or analysis in environmental laboratories, wastewater treatment plant, water plant, and commercial laboratories.
This course will benefit those who are responsible for the quality of laboratory data.

Learning Objectives: You will learn how to incorporate quality assurance procedures to help validate data by reviewing all paperwork associated with the specific test being performed. You will learn to review calculations and evaluate the results for proper rounding, significant figures, and determine if data is reported with the proper reporting units. You will learn the proper procedure for making corrections to raw data on company approved data sheets. You will learn the guidelines to follow when determining significant figures. You will also learn to report results with the appropriate reporting units and how to convert analytical data into the correct reporting units by using some common conversion factors that are routinely used in water and wastewater laboratories. This training will show you how to document “suspect” data with appropriate “qualification statements” and reporting codes. You will also learn best practices and procedures for a final review of data and implementing an evaluation process to ensure test results are displayed with the correct test name and the appropriate parameter names are reported based upon permit limits or possible maximum containment level requirements.

Course Description: This training video takes you through the review process prior to reporting final results. It shows you what to look for when evaluating raw data calculations. This will help to ensure the quality of data before releasing the results for internal or external use. It demonstrates the correct process for rounding off numbers in data calculations. The training also shows how to correctly round off your data based on the guidelines referenced in Standard Methods for the Examination of Water and Wastewater. The video also gives examples and instructions for the usage of significant figures in the reporting of analytical results based on the Significant Figure Rule. It is important for analytical results to be reported with the appropriate reporting units and this training demonstrates how to convert data using the correct conversion factor. This video will make you aware of what to focus on when evaluating a final report and how to document data that might be “suspect” with the appropriate “qualification statement”. This training also takes your through many examples that demonstrate how to convert data into the correct reporting units to give your calculations the highest level of accuracy. Beginning analysts, experienced analysts, plant operators and specifically those involved with laboratory testing and the use of laboratory equipment will benefit.
