Basic Laboratory Calculations

6.5 Contact Hours

Generating Defensible Data

Reduce common calculation and reporting errors by brushing up on basic laboratory calculations. Reports submitted to state and federal agencies should provide data in the appropriate concentration units in order to ensure consistency and to accurately reflect the concentrations detected for the reported parameters. All involved persons - from analysts to superintendents - should be well-versed in appropriate units, calculations, and significant figures. Misrepresented data can skew results and violate permit limitations.

Who Should Attend
All operators, laboratory analysts, managers, and superintendents working in the water and wastewater industries could benefit from this refresher course. Emphasis is placed on calculating results, understanding how those results were obtained, and reporting them precisely.

Course Description

A chain is only as strong as its weakest link, and this adage holds true for data collection. One bad calculation or conversion can produce a string of bad data. This course will help analysts and superintendents reduce data errors from the start. Bring your calculators because this intensive course will require participants to complete problem sets to solidify their knowledge.

Learning Objectives
Participants will come away with a better understanding of how to perform basic calculations. They will have confidence in their calculations and feel secure that the data they report is defensible.

The course will:
•Review units and conversions for measure using weights and volumes
•Demonstrate the proper use of significant figures
•Show how to calculate desired concentrations of calibration standards and quality control
   samples
•Provide instructions on calculations needed to determine final results for BOD/CBOD, COD,
solids determinations, and Method Detection Limit calculations
•Demonstrate basic statistic calculations needed to prepare control charts
