The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency recently awarded organizations, agencies and universities working in Ohio $4,508,572 in grants under the Great Lakes Restoration Initiative. The grant focuses on cleaning up toxics and toxic hot spot areas of concern, combating invasive species, promoting near-shore health by protecting watersheds from polluted run-off, and restoring wetlands and other habitats. The U.S. EPA recently released the final human health assessment for trichloroethylene (TCE). The EPA characterizes the chemical as carcinogenic to humans and as a human noncancer health hazard. This assessment may lead to a revision of the maximum containment level for TCE in drinking water. Alloway is certified by the Ohio EPA and NELAC to test for TCE.

Former Customer Service Manager, Nichole Jones, will be taking the lead as the new Laboratory Manager of the Lima facility. Nichole has been employed with Alloway for nearly 10 years. Alloway is excited about the direction she will offer to the Lima laboratory.

In June, John traveled to Kenya as a part of the global graduate studies in the Earth Expeditions program. The focus of the trip was on studying sustainable approaches to human-wildlife coexistence.

The Ohio EPA Division of Surface Water has begun conducting wastewater laboratory inspections. General Laboratory Criteria (GLC) were established for common analyses. The GLC are based on 40 CFR 136 and Standard Methods. You can download a copy of the GLC audit checklist here.
