Harmful Algal Bloom (HAB) and Algal Toxin Testing

Cyanobacteria, more commonly referred to as blue-green algae or Harmful Algal Blooms, are microscopic organisms found in surface water. These cyanobacteria produce cyanotoxin that can cause illness and death in humans and animals.

The Ohio EPA now requires public water systems using surface water to monitor their source and/or finished water for microcystins, a type of cyanotoxin produced by cyanobacteria, and/or the microcystins gene (mcyE).

Alloway offers testing for both Total Microcystins by the Ohio EPA DES 701.0 (ELISA) Method and Cyanobacteria Screening by qPCR, Ohio EPA Method 705.0, using Phytoxigene™ CyanoDTec to detect and quantify the presence of Cyanobacteria and their toxin producing genes.
