Session Descriptions

Introduction to Inquiry-Based Learning

What is inquiry-based learning?  How does IBL differ from more traditional learning? How can I use IBL with my own students?  What are the steps for successful investigations?

Not All Hands-On Learning is Inquiry-Based Learning

Develop the inquiry mindset.  Become aware of the value of different approaches to teaching science.  Give teachers the knowledge to match different teaching approaches to different learning goals for their students.

Processing the Process Skills of Science

Construct a more complete and accurate understanding of the process skills of science and the central role these skills play in the learning of science concepts.  Identify the developmental levels of the process skills and redesign activities in ways that promote student’s continuing development of these skills.

So Many Questions

Give students opportunities to ask their own questions.  What are effective and investigable questions?

The Inquiry Experience

Design and conduct an open inquiry.   Distinguish between a prediction and a hypothesis.  Generate new knowledge and understanding.  Provide teachers a personal experience in inquiry that can transform their thinking and understand the process of inquiry.

Taking Inquiry-Based Learning from Concept to Classroom

Help teachers recognize that they can prepare students for doing inquiry by making small changes in activities, and find practical applications for IBL. Convey the importance of assessment to successful IBL activities.  Relate Ohio education standards to IBL.
